How to reply to an invitation

  • Reply soon, and always before the reply-by date. Hosts plan food and seats around the count.
  • Thank them first, then give a clear answer. “Maybe” is fine only with a date you will confirm by.
  • Answer the way the invitation asks. If there is an RSVP link, use it, even if you also send a message.
  • Say how many are coming if the invitation allows guests or children.

Frequently asked questions

How do you say thank you for the invitation?

Thank the host first, then give a clear yes or no and the number of people coming. For example: “Thank you so much for the invitation! We’d love to come, there will be two of us.”

How do you decline an invitation politely?

Thank them, say you cannot make it, and wish them well. A short reason is kind but not required: “Thank you for inviting me. I’m sorry I can’t make it, but I hope you have a wonderful time.”

Should I reply to an invitation by text?

If the invitation came by text or WhatsApp, yes. If it has an RSVP link or card, answer there too, so the host has your reply in their count.

How soon should you reply to an invitation?

Within a few days, and always before the reply-by date. For weddings, reply as soon as you know.

How do you thank someone for inviting you after the event?

Send a short message the next day that names something you enjoyed: “Thank you for a lovely evening, the food was amazing.”
