QR Code Size Checker: how big should your QR code be?

Pick where the code will be printed and paste your link. Get the minimum and recommended size, check your planned size, and print a real size test sheet before you order.

Longer links mean more dots, so the code must be bigger.

Minimum size1.5 in3.8 cm
Recommended1.9 in4.8 cm
Your 1 in code is too small. Some phones will struggle to scan it.
Grid: 37 x 37 dots (version 5)
Each dot at your size: 0.69 mm
Characters: 79
Error correction: M
A short link like go.trackflyer.com/q/abc1234 needs only a 29 x 29 grid, so this code could print about 22% smaller (minimum 1.2 in).

How to use the QR code size checker

  1. Choose where the code will be printed. Each option uses a typical scanning distance. Pick "Custom distance" if yours is different.
  2. Paste exactly what the code will contain. Use the real link, including any tracking tags, because length changes the size.
  3. Tick the logo box if your code has a logo in the middle. Logo codes need more error correction, which adds dots.
  4. Enter your planned size in inches or centimeters to see if it passes.
  5. Print the test sheet at 100 percent and scan each size from your real distance with a few different phones.

QR code minimum sizes by use

How the size is calculated

A QR code is a grid of square dots called modules. Phones need each module to appear big enough in the camera to read it, so the size you need depends on two things:

  • Distance: the common rule of thumb is about 10 to 1, meaning a code scanned from 10 inches should be about 1 inch wide.
  • Grid size: that rule assumes the smallest common grid (25 x 25). Longer links, logos and higher error correction add modules, so the checker scales the size up by your actual grid.

The checker never goes below 0.8 inch (2 cm) for print, because very small codes fail on older phones, in low light and on glossy paper. The recommended size adds 25 percent as a safety margin.

This is a practical guide, not a guarantee. Paper, ink, lighting, curved surfaces and phone cameras all change results. The test sheet is the real check: print it, then scan from the actual distance.

How to make a QR code smaller without breaking it

Shorten the link

Every character adds to the grid. A long link with tracking tags can need a 37 x 37 grid or more, while a short link fits in 25 x 25 or 29 x 29. That can shrink the minimum size by 20 to 40 percent. A dynamic QR code does this automatically: the code holds a short link that forwards to your long one.

Skip the logo on small prints

Logos force high error correction, which adds modules. On business cards and small stickers, a plain code scans more reliably.

Keep strong contrast and a quiet zone

Dark code on a light background, and a blank margin of about 4 modules around it. Light codes on dark backgrounds and busy photos behind the code cause most scan failures. Read how to test a QR code before printing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum size for a QR code?

For print, about 0.8 inch (2 cm) for a short link scanned up close. Most flyers and postcards should use at least 1 to 1.2 inches.

How big should a QR code be on a flyer?

At least 1 inch for a short link, and 1.5 inches or more for a long link or a code with a logo. Use the checker with your exact link to be sure.

What is the 10 to 1 rule for QR codes?

A rule of thumb that a QR code should be about one tenth of the scanning distance wide: 1 inch for 10 inches away. It works for short links; longer links need a bigger code.

Does a logo make a QR code bigger?

Usually yes. A logo covers part of the code, so it needs high error correction, which adds dots to the grid and increases the minimum size.

Why does my link length change the QR code size?

More characters need more modules. A larger grid with the same printed size means smaller dots, which are harder for phones to read, so the code must be printed bigger.

How do I print a QR code at the exact size?

Use the test sheet button, print at 100 percent with "fit to page" turned off, and measure one code with a ruler before you scan it.

What is the maximum size of a QR code?

The largest QR code is Version 40: a grid of 177 x 177 modules that holds up to 2,953 bytes, about 4,296 letters and numbers. There is no maximum print size. A code can be as big as a billboard, as long as it is scanned from a matching distance.

How many pixels does a QR code need?

On a screen, give every module at least 3 pixels, so a 25 x 25 code with its 4 module margin needs about 100 x 100 pixels; 300 pixels or more looks sharp on phones. For print, export at 300 dpi: a 1 inch code needs at least 300 x 300 pixels. An SVG has no pixel limit at all.
