How to use the EDDM route map

  1. Enter up to 5 ZIP codes separated by commas and press Show routes. Each ZIP gets its own color on the map.
  2. Pick your routes. Click a route line on the map or tick it in the list. Use "Largest 5" to start fast, or sort the list by homes.
  3. Decide on businesses. EDDM lets you mail to residential addresses only, or to every address on the route. Tick "Include businesses" to count both.
  4. Set your costs. Enter your postage and printing cost per piece. The total updates as you select routes.
  5. Download the route list as a CSV for your print shop or for the USPS EDDM order, or track the routes with TrackFlyer.

What the numbers mean

FieldWhat it is
RouteThe USPS carrier route ID: the ZIP code plus a route code such as C001 (city route), R001 (rural) or H001 (highway contract).
HomesResidential delivery points on the route. With EDDM you mail one piece per address.
BizBusiness delivery points. Only counted when you choose to include businesses.
PiecesTotal flyers or postcards you need to print for the selected routes.
Per pieceYour postage plus printing cost for one piece.
TotalPieces multiplied by cost per piece: your campaign budget before design.

Where the route data comes from

The map loads carrier routes straight from the USPS EDDM mapping service, the same source the Post Office uses for its own Every Door Direct Mail tool. Route shapes are drawn along the streets each carrier covers, and the home and business counts come with them. Nothing is stored or resold: the data goes from USPS to your browser.

Honest limits: USPS updates counts regularly, so the numbers can shift slightly from week to week. Some ZIPs take up to 10 seconds to load. Postage and printing defaults are only estimates; check the current EDDM postage rate on the USPS site and get a print quote before you order.

A worked example: Dallas 75201

Downtown Dallas (75201) has 16 carrier routes. Say a plumbing company wants to reach the 3 biggest residential routes:

StepNumber
Routes selected3 (C034, C001, C052)
Homes on those routesabout 4,100
Cost per piece (example: $0.25 postage + $0.15 print)$0.40
Campaign costabout $1,640
Jobs needed to break even at $350 per job5

That last line is the question most owners never answer after the mail goes out: did those 3 routes bring in 5 jobs? Which route brought most of them? That is what TrackFlyer measures, by giving every route its own tracking QR code.

Choosing the right routes

Start with the largest routes

Big routes spread fixed costs (design, setup, bundling) over more homes. Sort by homes and start with the top routes near your service area.

Match the route to your customer

A route full of apartments behaves differently from a route of single family homes. For services like lawn care, roofing or HVAC, look for routes with mostly houses. Zoom into the map: dense grids near downtown usually mean apartments.

Test, then double down

Mail a few routes first, measure responses per route, and put your next budget into the routes that answered. Without per route tracking, every route looks the same in your results.

Frequently asked questions

Is this EDDM route map free?

Yes. It is free with no signup and no limit on searches. It loads routes directly from USPS in your browser.

How many ZIP codes can I check at once?

Up to 5 per search. Each ZIP is drawn in its own color, and you can select routes across all of them.

What is a carrier route?

A carrier route is the group of addresses one mail carrier delivers to. It is identified by the ZIP code plus a code like C001. EDDM is ordered by whole carrier routes, so you mail every residential address (or every address) on each route you pick.

Can I mail to only part of a route?

No. EDDM works by whole carrier routes. You can choose residential only or all addresses, but not individual streets. For street level targeting you would need a mailing list instead of EDDM.

How accurate are the costs?

The piece counts come from USPS. The cost per piece is whatever you enter: postage plus printing. Check the current EDDM rate at USPS and get a print quote for an exact number.

How do I know which routes worked after mailing?

Put a different tracking QR code on the postcards for each route. When people scan, you see which route they came from. TrackFlyer creates one code per route and shows scans and booked jobs on the same map.
